Flying Saucer

When I was sitting on my patio observing nature this weekend, I was trying to think of something to put in my blog. The news is not anything I want to discuss and certainly not the economy and not even my job. Well, my job has a little something to do with the subject of the day. As I was thinking about it I thought that maybe I should write about some of the funny and/or weird issues that many BBB staffers come across in their BBB work.

I remember when I was just a “pup” in BBB work – I wanted to help everybody – you know that anxious enthusiasm that all NEW employees have! This was back in the 70’s and I was doing my work and the phone rang and the little lady on the other end told me she saw a UFO (unidentified flying object) and wanted to know how to report it. Oh, boy, this was right up my alley!

Not knowing what to do, I took her name and phone number and told her I’d find out and call her back. I used all the tools in my tool belt at the time – the phone book! I remember sitting there thinking that UFO’s have to do with flying and we had Reese Air Force Base just on the other side of Lubbock, so I called the general information line – and as an aside to this story – my telephone was a dial phone! We’ll discuss the kind of phone we had when I was growing up in another blog post – no dial; just tell the operator when she asked “number please”!

Back to my story – when the young airman answered the phone I told him who I was and that I was with the BBB in Lubbock and that someone had reported to me they had seen a UFO and wanted to know where to report it. Thank goodness he didn’t ask me why she called the Better Business Bureau or start laughing out loud. I would’ve comeback with “I don’t know” - Why do people call the BBB and ask what the temperature is or what’s the weather going to do – don’t you know BBB staffers know everything???!!!!

This young guy was very professional and told me that UFO’s are reported to Project Blue Book and he gave me a number to pass on to the lady. I thanked him and called her and told her she needed to report it to Project Blue Book.

I’ve never seen a UFO before; however I wish I could sometime. I am curious and I want to believe that it’s not possible for the human race to be the only inhabitants of the world/universe. Don’t know if aliens are trying to take over the world but do think it’s possible that we are not alone.

I’m a huge X-Files fan – even named my little Bichon Frise after Fox Mulder – her name is Foxxie! That show really made me begin thinking about visitors from other planets and how if we think we are the only ones here, we are pretty arrogant. I’m still grieving about that show going off the air. I miss Mulder and Scully’s weekly investigations and was terribly disappointed in the second movie – another blog post subject.

Now, if I haven’t totally turned you off reading my blog, let me hear from you. I want to know what you are interested in, so feel free to leave me a comment.

The BBB system issued a news release regarding its concern that consumers might be susceptible to deceptive telemarketing calls about their auto warranties running out or about to run out.

If you own a car, you have probably received calls and mail from "warranty" companies that are soliciting your business.  These extended service contracts are not the same thing as your auto manufacturer warranty.

Be sure and check it out before considering purchasing an extended warranty.

Check out our tips in our News Center.

BBB has launched two technological projects that make it easier for you to search for company reports online or with mobile devices.

From your mobile web browser, you will automatically be directed to m.bbb.org from bbb.org where you can immediately search for companies. This will be so handy for you to be able to search for Accredited Businesses as you are shopping. The interface has been adapted to iPhone, Blackberry or other Windows mobile devices.

The second is a gadget that you can add to your igoogle home page which will bring the search right to your desktop! Just go to “Add stuff” and search on BBB. You can download and add it from right there or copy and paste this link in your browser window: Download Igoogle Gadget

BBB took an opportunity this week to warn consumers and businesses about the many home improvement companies that have come to the City to help in the clean-up after the terrible hail storms last week.  You can click here to read the entire news release.

Unfortunately, BBB does not know all the companies that come from outside our service area, so it is really important to check out any company with whom you are considering doing business.  Some businesses are legitimate businesses that go to areas that have been hard hit by storms - some of our companies do the same thing.  How do you tell the good guys from those that would try to rip you off?  Check them out with your BBB first!

BBB always encourages consumers and businesses to do business right here at home and offers a list of companies that have been invited to join and become accredited through BBB.  Click here to print off a list of current accredited roofing businesses.

Companies that wish to apply for accreditation with BBB should click here.

Just a week or so ago I had another opportunity to speak to a group about Identity Theft and had a nice time of exchanging stories, tips, and sharing some good 'ole common sense advice. A few days after that, I received an email from a BBB colleague reminding us about the FTC Red Flag Rule! The what? What does my speech and the Red Flag Rule have in common?  You!

It's easy to protect ourselves from identity theft, well, maybe easier, but what about others protecting our identity? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Red Flag Rule is designed to help protect our identity when we deal with businesses - such as financial institutions and creditors. It's been around since 2008, but it's my understanding that the FTC will begin enforcing the rule on May 1, 2009.

In a nutshell, the rule is a law which requires certain industries to "develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs, as part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction (FACT) Act of 2003...must be in place by November 1, 2008 and must provide for the identification, detection, and response to patterns, practices or specific activities - known as red flags - that could indicate identity theft."

You may have already become aware by your bank's fraud department calling you to check to see if you had made certain purchases that look suspicious; or received a letter in the mail asking you to call them if you had not applied for credit, etc. These are specific programs to protect you from identity theft.

How do you start in protecting yourself?  Be discerning about who you give your information to.  Start With Trust - begin by identifying the good businesses - the ones that have agreed to abide by a strong set of standards and have been invited to become accredited through BBB.
